What EV Charger Grants are available

As mentioned, there are several EV charger grants available to support the switch to electric vehicles and the installation of charging infrastructure. The four main grants include the Plug-In Vehicle Grant (PiVG), the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), and the On-street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS). Together, these EV charging grants play a vital role in making the use of electrical vehicles and EV charging more convenient and affordable for everyone.

The Plug-In Vehicle Grant (PiVG)

The plug-in vehicle grant is designed to encourage the uptake of ultra-low and zero emission vans and trucks, making the transition to an electric vehicle more affordable.

  • Who’s entitled? Vehicle manufacturers or third-party approved dealerships can apply for their vehicles to be included as part of the scheme, making the grant available to their customers.
  • What are the benefits? The grant can cover a percentage of the vehicle’s price, providing a significant discount for customers on a range of ultra-low and zero emission vehicles including vans and trucks.
  • How does it work? To be eligible, the vehicle must meet specific criteria set by the government, such as emission levels and a minimum range of electric power. You can see the full set of criteria on the gov.co.uk website.
  • How do I apply? Vehicle manufacturers and third-party dealerships can apply online for their range of vehicles to be included in the scheme. If approved, the discount will be automatically applied at the point of purchase for the customer.

Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme is aimed at homeowners looking to install a convenient and cost-effective EV charging point to their home. This EV charger grant helps to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles by making at-home charging more accessible.

  • Who’s entitled? The scheme is open to homeowners, those who live in a rented property, or own a flat and have a dedicated off-street parking space. You must also own or lease a qualifying electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.
  • What are the benefits? The scheme covers up to 75% of the installation cost of a home charging point, capped at a maximum £350 per EV charging point, to provide significant savings on installation for EV owners.
  • How does it work? To claim this grant, a UK approved installer, like Halliday Lighting, will check the homeowner’s eligibility and handle the application process on their behalf, simplifying the steps involved.

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

This workplace EV charging grant supports all eligible businesses in installing EV charging points at their premises, supporting sustainable transport in the workplace and promoting a cleaner, more eco-friendly way of commuting and fleet operation. If you’re a state-funded education institution, there is a separate grant available to you.

  • Who’s entitled? The grant is available for businesses, charities, public sector organisations, and small accommodation businesses. There is a full list of eligibility criteria which you can view on the gov.co.uk website.
  • What are the benefits? This grant covers up to 75% of the total cost of purchase and installation of EV charging points, capped at £350 per socket, with a maximum of 40 sockets per organisation.
  • How does it work? The workplace EV charging grant is given as a voucher code, which can be redeemed with a UK approved installer (such as Halliday Lighting). You can apply for this grant online using the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) application form.

The On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS)

This particular EV charge point grant is aimed at helping local authorities and councils provide convenient and accessible charging points for residents who don’t have off-street parking. By partnering with UK approved suppliers, like Halliday Lighting, local authorities can improve EV charging infrastructure in their area.

  • Who’s entitled? This grant is for local authorities and councils to make EV charging points more accessible for homeowners who don’t have off-street parking.
  • What are the benefits? This scheme allows for up to 60% funding of the capital costs of purchasing and installing on-street EV charge points.
  • How does it work? Once a local authority has submitted their application to the Energy Saving Trust and it is approved, they can select the type of EV charging points they wish to install along with suitable installation sites based on several factors, including who will benefit the most.
