Halliday Lighting works in partnership with Vision West Notts College to offer employment for apprentices undertaking training in electrical engineering. Our first candidate, Jack, completed his apprenticeship in 2019 and is now employed in a full-time role at Halliday Lighting as an Assistant Project Designer & Estimator. Our second candidate, Daniel, joined Halliday Lighting in March 2019 and is working towards the completion of a three-year electrical engineering apprenticeship.
Whilst completing their apprenticeships, both Jack and Daniel worked 4 days a week within our design team, learning to use AutoCAD to create sports lighting designs for sports projects across the UK and overseas as well as supporting with other administrative duties. Practical observations required as part of the apprenticeship were carried out alongside our on-site installation teams. And, at college, the focus was on project work covering topics such as health and safety and electrical principles.
Halliday Lighting also employs a number of other staff who started their careers as apprentices on various electrical-based programmes. These include Alex (Sales Director and Company Owner), Joe (Design Director), Lee and Tommy (Project Managers), and most of our on-site electrical installation team members. The skills learned through an apprenticeship are seen as highly valuable within our business as they provide a solid and comprehensive foundation for our employees to then specialise in the niche industry of sports lighting design and installation.
For others looking to consider an apprenticeship in electrical engineering, Jack suggests: “Gaining work experience at Halliday Lighting whilst completing my apprenticeship gave me a good understanding of the practical and theory aspects of working in electrical design and installation. I’d recommend this route to others as I’ve definitely learned and experienced more than I would have done by just going to college.”
