As part of phase two of England Rugby’s 2015 World Cup commitment to deliver 100 new 3G synthetic pitches across the country, Halliday Lighting were contracted by SIS Pitches to carry out the installation of floodlights for a new 3G rugby pitch at Billingham RUFC in Stockton-on-Tees.
The floodlit 3G rugby pitch was built in 2017 as the fourth Rugby 365 project to be completed in England. The new pitch creates an opportunity not only for Billingham RUFC’s development plans but for clubs across Durham to train and play year-round too.
Billingham RUFC is a large community club with teams from U6 to senior age as well as womens’, girls’ and veterans’ teams. The 3G pitch enables additional training sessions to take place, more flexibility with fixtures and fewer cancellations due to poor weather.
Halliday Lighting installed floodlights not only for the 3G pitch but also for the adjacent training areas, helping to maximise the space the club has available for training. Our teams have since re-visited the site to carry out the first instance of required annual maintenance for the metal halide floodlights.
The investment in the Rugby 365 programme by England Rugby aims to create access to quality, safe artificial grass surfaces across the country. In four months of use since the first three projects were completed, over 250 matches were played, more than 30 rugby festivals were run and a combined footfall of 20,000 players were able to make use of these facilities.
At Billingham RUFC, the focus is on growing the club and working closely with the local community to increase participation in rugby. The club also played host to an U18 England fixture against Scotland in March 2019.
