Billingham Rugby Club

Billingham

Durham, England

As part of phase two of England Rugby’s 2015 World Cup commitment to deliver 100 new 3G synthetic pitches across the country, Halliday Lighting was contracted by SIS Pitches to carry out the installation of floodlights for a new 3G rugby pitch at Billingham Rugby Club in Stockton-on-Tees.

The pitches at Ben Rhydding Hockey Club are used for nearly 20 senior and junior club teams and by Ilkley Grammar School during the daytime too.

Having two floodlit hockey pitches makes the club one of the largest multi-sport facilities in the region. It also creates more space for training and extends the hours of pitch use available at the club.

The existing hockey pitch at Ben Rhydding Hockey Club saw Halliday Lighting re-head the metal halide floodlights. This is something that is usually needed after a number of years of usage, when it becomes more cost-efficient to replace the lights rather than to keep maintaining and fixing them.

LED floodlights were then installed for the new hockey pitch providing a state-of-the-art solution for this facility.

The investment in the Rugby 365 programme by England Rugby aims to create access to quality, safe artificial grass surfaces across the country. In four months of use since the first three projects were completed,  over 250 matches were played, more than 30 rugby festivals were run and a combined footfall of 20,000 players were able to make use of these facilities.

At Billingham RUFC, the focus is on growing the club and working closely with the local community to increase participation in rugby. The club also played host to an U18 England fixture against Scotland in March 2019.
