Halliday Lighting was appointed to design, supply and install a new LED floodlighting system for Nottingham University’s Highfields Sports Complex in Nottingham. The project formed part of the University’s wider ambition to further enhance the facility as a high-performance training and competition venue capable of supporting both elite and community sport. The University regularly hosts national and international sporting events and required a lighting solution that would support continued growth while creating an inspiring environment for future generations of athletes.
The University required a floodlighting solution for a previously unlit playing area that could support a variety of sporting activities and competition levels. The installation also needed to comply with relevant lighting standards while taking into account the site’s proximity to nearby tramlines and surrounding infrastructure. The project formed part of a broader facility enhancement programme and required a solution that would deliver both performance and flexibility for future use.
Working closely with the University and building on an established relationship, Halliday Lighting designed and installed a new 250 lux LED floodlighting system comprising four 18 metre lighting masts. The system was designed to provide high-quality illumination for varying levels of sports participation while complying with ILP guidance and site-specific requirements.
To maximise flexibility, a lighting control and dimming system was incorporated, allowing users to select appropriate lighting levels depending on the activity taking place. Additional power supply provisions were also included to support event infrastructure and temporary facilities when hosting competitions and larger sporting events.
The completed installation delivers a fully compliant 250 lux sports lighting solution that enables Nottingham University to continue hosting prestigious sporting events while opening up new opportunities for evening activity and competition. The new lighting has transformed a previously unlit playing area into a versatile facility capable of supporting training, fixtures and events throughout the year.
The project also strengthens Halliday Lighting’s long-standing relationship with the University and provides enhanced facilities for team sports, including rugby and BUCS competition activity. As one of the UK’s leading sporting universities, the upgraded facility will help support both participation and elite performance programmes for years to come.
